Number of Paramedics with SP/IP

The request was partially successful.

Dear Health and Care Professions Council,

Can you please provide details of the number of paramedics with supplementary/independent prescribing annotations currently on the register as of today’s date 11/04/2022 or the closest date data is available if not today’s date?

Can you also provide the total number of paramedics on the HCPC register as of today’s date or the closest date data is available?

Finally, how many paramedics have been sanctioned by the HCPC specifically for prescribing related issues/concerns or behaviour relating to their status as IP/SP. (Any public sanction other than where no further action was taken).

Yours faithfully,

Mark Jonas

Our Ref. FR07495

Dear Mark Jonas

Thank you for your email of 11 April 2022, in which you ask for
information in relation to paramedics with supplementary (SP)/independent
(IP) prescribing annotations.

Your request has been handled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
(FOIA).

The number of paramedics with supplementary/independent prescribing
annotations on 11 April 2022:

o   IP = 1,286

o   SP = 1,257

The number of paramedics on the HCPC Register on 11 April 2022 – 32,433.

We are unable to provide you with the number of paramedics who have been
sanctioned for prescribing related issues/concerns or behaviour relating
to their status as an IP/SP. This is because this information is not held
in an easily accessible format. To provide you with this information would
require that we conduct a manual review of each fitness to practise
paramedic case heard at final hearing where a sanction was imposed. This
would exceed the appropriate cost limit under Section 12 of the FOIA, that
being £450. Staff time can be charged at £25 per hour, this equates to 18
hours before the limit is met.

There have been 1,808 paramedic cases heard at final hearing where a
sanction was imposed. To access each case and extract the information
requested would take approximately 5 minutes per case. 1,808 multiplied by
5 minutes equates to 150 hours, therefore exceeding the cost limit.
