We're waiting for Oliver Murphy to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear FOI Team,

(ii) The number of individuals making a homeless application 'threatened with homelessness' since 2018, broken down into sexual orientation (including transgender), per month, per year and grand total;

(iii) The number of individuals supported into accommodation (temporary/emergency) since 2018, broken down into sexual orientation (including transgender), per month, per year and grand total;

(iv) The number of individuals owed a prevention and/or relief duty since 2018, broken down into sexual orientation (including transgender), per month, per year and grand total;

(v) The number of individuals to date, still waiting to be supported into accommodation, broken down by sexual orientation (including transgender).

(*Individuals defined as anyone between the ages of 16-80 years-old).

Yours faithfully,

Oliver Murphy

Dear Oliver,

I am writing in respect of your recent enquiry for information held by the
Council, I will respond under the provisions of the Freedom of Information
Act.

You asked the following:

I write to request information on the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender (LGBT) individuals who made a homeless application as legally
homeless and/or being threatened with homelessness between January 2018
and April 2022.

As part of this request, I would like the information to be broken down
into the following:
(i) The number of individuals making a homeless application while 'legally
homeless' since 2018, broken down into sexual orientation (including
transgender), per month, per year and grand total;
(ii) The number of individuals making a homeless application 'threatened
with homelessness' since 2018, broken down into sexual orientation
(including transgender), per month, per year and grand total;
(iii) The number of individuals supported into accommodation
(temporary/emergency) since 2018, broken down into sexual orientation
(including transgender), per month, per year and grand total;
(iv) The number of individuals owed a prevention and/or relief duty since
2018, broken down into sexual orientation (including transgender), per
month, per year and grand total;
(v) The number of individuals to date, still waiting to be supported into
accommodation, broken down by sexual orientation (including transgender).
(*Individuals defined as anyone between the ages of 16-80 years-old).

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the late response
to your request for information. I am sorry that South Lakeland District
Council did not respond to your information request within the statutory
20 working days. I am grateful for your patience regarding this matter and
I am sorry if this has caused any inconvenience to you.

I confirm the Council holds the information requested and in accordance
with your request please see the attached document.

Please note; We have been able to provide a breakdown of figures based on
sexual orientation based on the options available on the software that we
use for recording homelessness application, however, transgender is not
classified as a sexual orientation on our system.

There is overlap between questions (i), (ii), and (iv). In line with our
recording systems we have therefore provided the information in a slightly
amended form as follows:

• The number of new homeless applications per month from April 2018 to
March 2022 (inclusive) broken down by sexual orientation
• The number of individuals owed a prevention duty (i.e. those classed
as being ‘threatened with homelessness’) per month from April 2018 to
March 2022 (inclusive) broken down by sexual orientation
• The number of individuals owed a relief duty (i.e. those classed as
being ‘legally homeless’) per month from April 2018 to March 2022
(inclusive) broken down by sexual orientation

The data provided for question (iii) relates to households placed into
short-term temporary/emergency accommodation by the council – either under
a s188 or s193 duty or under discretionary powers. This does not include
applicants helped to move on into settled, longer term accommodation.

The data for question (v) depicts the current number of open cases for
applicants owed either the relief duty or main housing duty. These are the
households we are working with to resolve their homelessness and includes
those who are in temporary/emergency accommodation provided by the council
and those who have been able to remain in their property on a short-term
basis or made their own arrangements for temporary accommodation but are
still classed as being legally homeless.

Please be aware that the figures for the financial year 2018/19 do not
include legacy cases that were dealt with under legislation prior to the
implementation of the Homelessness Reduction Act in April 2018, which is
why overall numbers for the year are lower than the following years.
Legacy cases were recorded separately and could not be included in this
return.

If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your request, you have the
right to ask us to review our handling of your request. Any request for an
Internal Review must be made in writing within 40 days of this response.
Should you wish to request a review, please email [1][South Lakeland
District Council request email] or write to Paul Mountford, Specialist,
Performance, Innovation and Commissioning at the address below. Our
Internal Review Process is available on our [2]website.

Should you remain dissatisfied following our internal review, you can
refer the matter directly to the Information Commissioner.
