Number of households presenting as homeless that claim Universal Credit

The request was refused by Cannock Chase District Council.

Dear FOI Team,

I write to request information on the number of households claiming Universal Credit and/or housing benefit who have presented to you as homeless while between January 2019 and April 2022.

As part of this request, I would like this information to be broken down into the following:

(i) The total number of households claiming Universal Credit presenting as homeless since January 2019, broken down into households living in leasehold property and council-owned property (otherwise known as council tenants) and years;

(i) The total number of households claiming housing benefit – part of the legacy welfare system – presenting as homeless since January 2019, broken down into households living in leasehold property and council-owned property (otherwise known as council tenants) and years.

Please present the information in Excel format.

Stafford Borough Council. (as this department is a shared service).

Unfortunately Cannock Chase District Council and Stafford Borough Council
do not administer Universal Credit. We therefore do not hold the
information requested.

Dear Mr Murphy,

Thank you for your email requesting information.

I have spoken with the relevant department and they have supplied the
following :

After deliberation the department holding the information informs me that
they are unable to supply the information requested.

This is because to retrieve the requested information, each record we hold
would have to be interrogated manually. Therefore the cost of locating and
retrieving the information exceeds the “appropriate limit” as stated in
the Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004.

In accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 this letter acts as
a Refusal Notice.

You may wish to refine and resubmit your request so that it reduces the
cost to within the “appropriate limit”. Please contact me if you would
like some advice on refining your request.

If, however it is of assistance to you, the department have provided the
following data for you, which I hope helps with your request.

2019 – 2020 there were 258 cases assessed as owed a duty and of these 79
were living in PRS and 14 were living in social rented
2020 – 2021 there were 178 cases assessed as owed a duty and of these 26
were living in PRS and 20 were living in social rented
2021 – 2022 there were 211 cases assessed as owed a duty and of these 82
were living in PRS and 22 were living in social rented
