Number of health services per local authority area
Dear NHS England,
I wish to investigate health care provision per population across local authority areas (32 London boroughs, City of London, 36 metropolitan boroughs, 55 unitary authorities, 201 non-metropolitan districts, The Isles of Scilly). These areas match the voting areas during the recent EU referendum.
I can access population estimates for these areas from the Office for National Statistics but cannot find an option to bulk download the data underpinning the NHS Choices website that contains information on GP surgeries, Walk-In Centres and Hospitals by post code area. If I had this data then I could collate the number of each service in each voting geography.
I therefore request that you provide this information (for the services mentioned here at least, hospitals to include primary services such as A&E, maternity etc) either with post code geographical information or already aggregated as counts within each voting geographic area as described. It would be useful to know the number of GPs in each surgery if you have that information.
If you also had that information for Wales or other devolved administrations, I would appreciate that too.
Yours faithfully,
Dr Rob Davidson

NHS England does not hold this information.
It may help if we explain that the NHS in England is not a single
organisation but is made up of a range of organisations such as Hospitals,
Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and Ambulance Trusts. NHS England is
responsible for commissioning primary care services such as GP and dental
surgeries, as well as some specialised secondary care services. Therefore,
any recorded information NHS England may be able to provide in response to
an FOI request will generally relate to the services NHS England
commissions. For information on commissioned services and the types of
information NHS England holds can be found on our [1]website and
[2]publication scheme. For further information on the NHS, its structure
and other NHS organisations please refer to NHS Choices [3]here.

Dear FOI England (NHS ENGLAND),
Thank you for your response to my request for information on the number of each type of NHS service within certain geographic regions within England and other parts of the UK.
Your response states that you do not have this information on the number of NHS services within England because your role is solely to commission those services. I am somewhat surprised that you don't record the services you commission.
I was also further surprised that you pointed me towards NHS Choices given that I referred to NHS Choices in my original request. In fact, what I said was that the data I am looking for is contained within the NHS Choices database of services and I'm really just asking for a bulk download option of that data. Yet you claim not to have the data. Is NHS Choices a service that is run by NHS England? I can see the data I want within the NHS Choices service - why do you claim not to hold the data?
Please can you look again at my request and update me on whether you do control the data within NHS Choices and whether you can in fact help supply the data I have requested.
Yours sincerely,
Robert Davidson
