Number of deaths from 1st April 2020 to 1st of April 2021 were covid 19 is listed as the sole cause of Death

Dear Public Health England,

Please provide me with the total number of deaths in England Hospitals were covid 19/Sars cov2 is listed as the sole cause of death. Please could you provide this total number broken down into two age groups, for age group 0-16 and age group 16 and up.

Public Health England can confirm it does not hold the information you have specified.

Under Section 16 of the FOI Act, public authorities have a duty to provide advice and assistance. Accordingly, you may wish to contact the NHS and Office for National Statistics who may be able to assist you further.

The NHS produce statistics on deaths of patients who have died in hospitals in Engalnd and either tested postiive for COVID-19 or where no positive test result was received for COVID-19, but COVID-19 was mentioned on their death certificate. You can access these statistics at:

As PHE is advising the UK Government on its Covid 19 response it seems strange not to hold such basic information as a total number of deaths were covid 19 is listed as the sole cause.
