Number of Benefits Claimants with Direct Deductions

HM Revenue and Customs did not have the information requested.

Dear HM Revenue and Customs,

Please could you inform me of:

1. The total number of benefits claimants in England & Wales (Inc Universal Credit, Jobseekers,Income Support, Attendance Allowance, etc, etc)

2. The number of these benefits claimants (Eng&Wales) who have deductions taken out of their benefits before they receive it (e.g those who pay overpayments, arrears, fines etc).

3. The number of these benefits claimants (in England & Wales) who have Council Tax deducted directly from their benefits.

You may do this for the most recent calculation (for example if you have data for April 2022 but not for today). Also if you hold data for whole UK or UK except NI but not just England & Wales, you may provide this instead.

Yours faithfully,

A Martínez

Dear Amy Martínez,

Freedom of Information Act 2000 Acknowledgement

Thank you for your communication of 6 July.

We have allocated the above reference which you should quote if you need
to contact us.

We will arrange for a reply to be sent to you which will either comply
with our obligations under Freedom of Information Act or, if we think it's
an enquiry that we don't need to address under the terms of the Act, let
you know why. If it is the latter we will, if possible, pass it on to a
more appropriate part of the Department for answer.

While we aim to respond to all freedom of information requests within 20
working days, if for some reason this timescale cannot be complied with,
we will, where possible, write to you explaining the reason for the delay
and provide an estimated time for response.

Yours sincerely
