Dear Mr Moore
In response to your FOI request, we do not hold data on the number of UK
residents reaching their 17th birthdays, athough this can be estimated from
the projections data on request. We do however hold projections of how many
people there will be resident in the UK by age at the mid-year point.
The projected number of persons aged 17 at mid-year 2008 to mid-2013 for
the UK are:
Year Number of 17 year olds
2008 808,581
2009 794,618
2010 769,591
2011 759,209
2012 742,616
2013 738,757
Souce: ONS 2006-based national population projections.
The 2006-based national population projections were published by the Office
for National Statistics on 23 October 2007, data can be downloaded from the
GAD website here. Please note that the assumptions underlying national
population projections are demographic trend based. They are not forecasts.
They do not attempt to predict the impact that new or future government
policies, changing economic circumstances or other factors (whether in the
UK or overseas) might have on demographic behaviour. They simply provide
the population levels and age structure that would result if the
assumptions about fertility, mortality and migration levels were to be
realised in practice
You have the right to have this decision reviewed internally by an internal
review process and, if you remain unhappy with the decision, by the
Information Commissioner. If you would like to have the decision reviewed
please write to Mike Hughes, Group Director, National Statistics Policy
Group, Office for National Statistics, Myddelton Street, London, EC1R 1UW.
If you have any further queries regarding the national population
projections please contact our team at: [email address], telephone
