Non-compliant traffic signage on the A4174 Ring Road

The request was successful.

Dear South Gloucestershire Council,

Last year you deployed non-compliant traffic signage on the A4174 Ring Road.

I contacted you in August about this and Douglas MacKay responded. After initially attempting to justify the existence of this signage, he realised he had nowhere to go and eventually conceded that the signage had no legal place out on the highway and it must be removed.

Since then, it has not been touched - the full exchange can be viewed here:

And here:

I contacted him again yesterday and states that he cannot now answer any questions related to this subject, therefore I am directing my FOI request to you.

March has now been and gone and the signage is still in-situ.

So, several questions result, your response being covered by the usual FOI time constraints.

1) Why haven’t the two non-compliant 30mph signs been removed as per the intended date?

2) When is the scheduled date for removal?

3) Given that anyone who has passed the recognised national driving test can see that such signage cannot be present in a posted 30mph limit when a system of street lighting is present, it is plainly evident even to the layman that such signage should never have been deployed. This is basic schoolboy level stuff, yet someone in a recognised position of authority signed this work off at the expense of those people they serve. Clearly, that person’s competence to carry out their role has to be put under the spotlight.

Who is the individual responsible for signing-off the deployment of the non-compliant signage in question?

4) How much has it cost to deploy the non-compliant signage?

5) How much will it cost to remove the non-compliant signage?

Yours,

Andy Whitehead
