Dear Ashton Yokovich-Brown

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REF No: 338610

Thank you for your information request, received on 21 June. I apologise
for the delay in responding to your request and any inconvenience that
this has caused.

You requested the following information:

(You stated that "If the above data is not available for the period of 3
years then please provide it for the period for which it is available".
The council can provide information for the 2009/10 financial year.)

1. The number of job applications for lawyer/solicitor level roles made to
the Council's Legal Department within the last 3 years.

There were only two vacancies at lawyer/solicitor level in financial year
2009/10. They attracted 32 applications.

2. The number of job applications for lawyer/solicitor level roles made to
the Council's Legal Department by `Jewish / Somali / Sikh / Hindu / Tamil'
within the last 3 years.

Please note - information relating to the religion of job applicants and
employees is provided at their discretion. Over 33% of applicants and 60%
of employees choose not to provide the data, hence the information the
council can report on does not give a complete picture.

No applicants declared themselves Jewish, Hindu, Sikh or Somali. The
council does not monitor "Tamil". 11 declined to state a religion.

3. How many of the above applications by `Jewish / Somali / Sikh / Hindu /
Tamil' have been successful.

4. How many `Jewish / Somali / Sikh / Hindu / Tamil' currently work as
lawyers/Solicitors for the Council and how many have worked as
lawyers/Solicitors on a yearly basis over the last 3 years.

Our Legal section comprises of 65 staff, 30 of whom have "Lawyer" in their
job title. Because of the small numbers involved, releasing this
information could cause an individual to be identified. Therefore, the
answers to questions 3 and 4 are exempt under Section 40 (2) of the
Freedom of Information Act. I can confirm that there are Muslim males
working in the Legal section. The release of an individual's sensitive
personal data relating to their private life would not be fair under the
First Data Protection Principle, bearing in mind the purpose for which the
data was originally obtained and the Council's relationship with the data
subject.

5. Has the Council ever looked at the above as an issue of concern and at
what level in the Council's corporate structure was it considered.

No
