NIHR Academic Clinical Fellows in Radiology Positions Awarded
Dear Health Education England,
I would be most grateful if you would provide me, under the Freedom of Information Act, details with respect to the number and location of NIHR awarded academic clinical fellows (ACF) in radiology specialty training.
As you will know, the NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) was created as a career development scheme and provides predoctoral academic training during medical specialty training period for doctors and dentists. It started in 2006 and continues to run to this day. Post are allocated on an annual basis to local integrated academic training partnerships of Health Education England (HEE), higher education institutes, medical schools and NHS Trusts/organisations.
From your data, I would specifically like to know how many of these posts:
1) Were awarded per year to doctors and dentists from 2006 to 2022, and by location (e.g. by deanery or by hospital trust - whichever you have information for)
2) Of those awarded, how many were awarded to doctors specialising in clinical radiology per year since 2006 to 2022 and location (e.g. by deanery or hospital trust - whichever you have information for).
Many thanks for your help and time.
Yours faithfully,
Susan Shelmerdine

Dear Susan
We refer to your email of 13 May 2022 requesting information relating to
NIHR funded Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) posts, held by Health
Education England (HEE).
HEE can confirm in accordance with S.1 (1) of the Freedom of Information
Act 2000 (FOIA) that we do hold some of the information that you have
requested.
HEE do not hold a breakdown of location of NIHR funded ACF posts in a
centrally retrievable format.
We do however hold the table below which provides the total number if NIHR
funded ACF posts nationally and the number of posts awarded to doctors
specialising in clinical radiology.
Recruitment into Recruitment Total Number
Year of speciality other than into Radiology of Academic % in
Recruitment Radiology Specialty Doctors in Radiology
training
2006 30 0 30 0.00%
2007 99 4 103 3.90%
2008 139 6 145 4.10%

2018 254 8 262 3.10%
2019 266 4 270 1.50%
2020 243 6 249 2.40%
2021 236 8 244 3.30%
Total 3132 86 3218
Please see the below caveats to the above data.
• The year of recruitment is based on the start date of first curriculum
a doctor in training is recruited into as ACF and that is NHIR funded.
• Where a doctor in training has moved from one HEE region to another
and has the same programme name & curriculum name, the earliest start
date of the curriculum is taken for year of recruitment
• The data is correct as of this morning 25/5/2022. As the 2022
recruitment round is still ongoing we currently do not hold this data
We believe the NIHR may also hold information relevant to your request,
