Dear Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council,

1) How many long tern empty properties (properties classed as empty for over 180 days) does the Council currently have as of the 1st April?

2) For 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21 what percentage of the New Homes Bonus award received was generated from reducing the number of Long Term Empty properties and what was the actual value of that?

3) Does the Council work with any third parties to help them reduce the number of Long Term Empty properties in the area. If so whom?

4) Does the Council have any published commitments to reduce the number of Long Term Empty Properties in the area and if so by how many and over what time period?

5) How much New Homes Bonus has the council forecast to generate in 2021?

Yours faithfully,

Nick Porter

Dear Mr Porter

Please see below Wirral Council’s response to your recent Freedom of
Information request.

1)      How many long term empty properties (properties classed as empty
for over 180 days) does the Council currently have as of the 1st April?

Comparative data for vacant dwellings by local authority district in
England is compiled by Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government
on the first Monday in October each year, as at 5^th October 2020 there
were 2,231 long term empty properties in Wirral.

2)      For 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21 what percentage of the New Homes
Bonus award received was generated from reducing the number of Long Term
Empty properties and what was the actual value of that?

Not possible to answer as due to the nature of the New Homes Bonus
calculation and converting properties into band D equivalent, and the
allocation for empty properties brought back into use isn’t separately
identified as a monetary value. If you wish to refine your query we may be
able to determine the number of properties for each year but not the
value.

3)      Does the Council work with any third parties to help them reduce
the number of Long Term Empty properties in the area. If so whom?

There are a range of schemes and initiatives which the Council undertakes
to reduce the number of empty homes, some of which are delivered in
conjunction with private developers, the Council also works
collaboratively and shares best practice with other local authorities in
the city region on developing approaches that reduce the number of long
term vacant properties.

4)      Does the Council have any published commitments to reduce the
number of Long Term Empty Properties in the area and if so by how many and
over what time period?

Wirral Councils Housing Strategy published in 2016 stated ‘We will work
with our partners to target empty property interventions and bring long
term empty properties back into use, improve neighbourhoods and the
housing offer in Wirral’, as part of Wirral Councils 2020 Vision a
commitment was included to return 1,250 empty properties to use by 31st
March 2020.

5)      How much New Homes Bonus has the council forecast to generate in
2021?

Total NHB allocation for 2021/22 is £178,150

Yours sincerely
