New Ferry Contracts

P. John made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Transport

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Department for Transport,

a little while ago, it was revealed that the Government had spent circa £100m on contracts with three ferry companies to provide capacity in the event that additional capacity was required on Brexit day (then in March). Notably Seaborne Freight.

Subsequently a further £30m was paid to Eurotunnel following legal action over the procurement process. And then the Government were again sued by P&O for similar reasons relating to unfair competition.

My understanding (possibly incorrect) was that the terms of those contracts expired at the end of March this year. I am keen to understand the present status.

Please could you tell me,
1) With which companies has the Government negotiated contingency capacity in the event that there should be disruption to cross channel traffic in October (air, ferries, rail or other modes of transport)
2) What is the value of those contracts
3) What are the terms under which any settlement has been reached with P&O following their legal action

Yours faithfully,
P John

Department for Transport
