via the What Do They Know website.

 

You are seeking;

 

Can you provide me with the following information in relation to the
neonatal heel prick test (Guthrie test):

 

1. How long are the blood samples retained?

2. Where are they stored?

3. How many samples are stored?

4. What year was the first sample stored?

 

In response;

 

The Trust uses an outside Laboratory for the Guthrie service, the Oxford
Screening Laboratory. The laboratory operates in accordance with the NHS
Newborn Blood Spot Screening Programme Code of Practice for the Retention
(attached) and Storage of Residual Spots (link below)

Taking your questions in turn;

 

1. How long are the blood samples retained?

Indefinitely

2. Where are they stored?

Blood spots are stored in the laboratory for approximately one year. They
are then transferred to a secure offsite facility.

3. How many samples are stored?

Approximately 600,000 (approximately 50,000 of these come from babies born
in East Berkshire)

4. What year was the first sample stored?

Samples from East Berkshire date back to 2000
