A charge rate of 36%.

Of the 382 reports (2 years) received, there were 137 charges brought.

And it's still early days for reports received in the latter months of 2021.

'Fraud offences reported to the police are recorded and collected by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) from Action Fraud and two industry bodies, Cifas and UK Finance (See Section 9, Measuring the data). NFIB fraud increased by 17% (to 936,276 offences) in the year ending March 2022 compared with the year ending March 2021; this is also 25% higher compared with the year ending March 2020. Although total fraud offences referred to the NFIB increased, those referred by Action Fraud decreased.'

Fraud Strategy: Stopping Scams and Protecting the Public

May 2023

'6. We will make it much easier to report scams. We will:

▪ Replace Action Fraud with a state-of-the-art system for victims to report fraud and cyber crimes to the police.

8. We will improve the law enforcement response to fraud. We will:

Launch a new National Fraud Squad with over 400 new specialist investigators, and make fraud a priority for the police.

12. In the year ending March 2021, Action Fraud received victim reports totalling a loss of £2.35 billion. Industry reporting suggests average personal losses for authorised frauds (these are frauds where the victim has approved a payment) could be almost £3,000.

20. Fraud levels spiked during the Covid pandemic, growing to over 5 million incidents in the year ending December 2021

48. However, reviews of Action Fraud have repeatedly identified shortcomings...

54. There has not been an independent review of fraud since 1986.

59. Currently, for every 1000 estimated frauds committed there is one successful prosecution.

Case study - Frederick Diji, a prolific romance fraudster... p. 25

134. There is currently no obligation for PSPs to attempt to repatriate money to fraud victims'
