Dear Highland NHS Board,

The Scottish Ambulance Service and patients rely on Immediate Care GPs and practice nurses in the remote and rural areas of Highland Health Board to provide expert medical assistance to victims of medical emergencies and trauma.

Immediate Care doctors and nurses for part of the tiered response of the national trauma framework.

Although the doctors and nurses in GP surgeries provide their time and skills free of charge to the public, there are significant costs in training and vehicle maintenance involved. To support this service, the NHS has a National Enhanced Service payments to medical practices to help offset these costs.

Please can you provide the following information:

1. Does NHS Highland now or has it ever had any GP practices which take part in the National Enhanced Service for Immediate Care?

2. How many practices receive(d) this payment?

3. When did the first practice start receiving these payments?

4. Is there any variation in the availability of this service to patients in different localities (ie: is the service only available to patients in some parts of Highland Health Board but not others) and if so why?

This information will assist us in the provision of this life-saving service to patients.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Yours faithfully,

Dr Robert S. Coull
