MSc Admission Statistics for Economics
Dear London School of Economics,
I would appreciate it if you could please provide the following data in a table format document so it is clear, for example in an Excel document or another similar document.
Requesting data for the last 3 years (2018/19 entry, 2017/18 entry, 2016/17 entry).
Data for 2019/20 entry would also be appreciated if it is available.
For each of these 3 courses:
1- MSc Economics
2- MSc Finance and Economics
3- MRes Economics
please provide information for questions a, b, c, d, e, f, g, a', b', c'.
a) Number of applications.
b) Number of offers.
c) Number of accepted students.
d) Average and median GRE results for students who got an offer (of those who did GRE).
e) How many offers were given to people with First class (1)?
f) How many offers were given to people with Upper Second class (2.1)?
g) How many offer holders marginally missed their offer, but were still accepted?
For part (e) and (f) indicate if it was achieved or predicted or both combined. If it happens to be combined, separated would be preferred.
For simplicity, it would be preferred if following information is provided on a separate table from the previous questions asked, however, up to you to decide.
a') Number of applications which came from LSE students (i.e. doing Bachelors at the time of application).
b') Number of offers to LSE students.
c') In addition, how many applications came from LSE courses; BSc Economics, BSc Mathematics & Economics, BSc Econometrics (each separately) and how many offers to each group.
*For all the data given, if possible please indicate the actual value instead of writing figures like <5. Especially if the number is 0.
This last question doesn't need to be in a table.
- For MRes Economics, how many applications came from students doing Bachelors at the time of application and how many of those got an offer? For both, please indicate how many were LSE students.
Thank you!
Yours faithfully,
John Clark
Dear John,
With reference to your request for information under the Freedom of Information Act, please find attached the information you requested.
Please note: Our systems are not set up for longitudinal reporting of individual students and so this is based on the data to which I have access and have been able to produce reports from. The data regarding previous LSE students therefore comes with the caveat that some records are overwritten and so the numbers may not be exact.
To get the level of detail requested would require significantly more time to report so would breach the cost limit set in Section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act since it would require individual interrogation of many records.
I've attached a spreadsheet for questions a-d, and a'-c' and the final question.
Re Questions e-g: For all three programmes, the standard offer is to achieve the equivalent of a UK Bachelor's degree with first class honours, so that applies to everyone and we would only make an offer to someone who had already achieved or was predicted to achieve that. We don't store this in a way that can easily be separated out (see above). There were <5 offer holders for any programme in any year where the condition was waived.
If you think that the information provided does not meet your request, contact me on 020 7849 4622 or write to Louise Nadal, School Secretary, London School of Economics and Political Science, Houghton Street, London, WC2A 2AE. We will then review the response to your request and get back to you within 20 working days. You can also contact the Information Commissioner's Office http://www.ico.gov.uk/, though they expect the internal review to be carried out before receiving a complaint directly.

Copying or reproducing such information in any way either in whole or in part without prior written consent may be an infringement of copyright or other intellectual property right belonging to the LSE or a third party.
