Dear Metropolitan Police Service (MPS),

I ask to be provided:

1. the records for theft/taking of a motor vehicle from

a. 01/01/2023 to 31/12/2023 and
b. 01/01/2024 to 31/12/2024

(inclusive) month on month i.e. the number of vehicle thefts notified each month, in EXCEL FORMAT, detailing:

2. the date of theft

3. about the vehicle, its:
a. the make
b. model
c. categorisation i.e. car, HGV, moped etc

2. whether the vehicles concerned have been recovered
3. the month of recovery held against the record

4. the age of the vehicle*

*I am only seeking characters 3 and 4 of the VRM; the two numbers (the age identifier. For example, 51 represents September 2001. The age identifier changes every six months in March and September. Where a cherished/personal, none age related plate, these characters will suffice - in Excel, I will be able to sort the data

Yours faithfully,

Mr P Swift

Dear Metropolitan Police Service (MPS),

20 working days have passed; when can I expect to receive the information?

Yours faithfully,

Mr P Swift

Metropolitan Police Service (MPS)

Hello P Swift,

Apologies for the delay, the analysts have an issue with providing every single theft by date for question 2 due to the shear amount of data this would produce.

Would you be happy to receive the rest of the information for your request by month and year as this will mean I can get this data to you this week?

So for clarity, we can provide everything except question 2.

Kind regards

Dear Metropolitan Police Service (MPS),

sorry, to my mind there is a contradiction, may be my reading:

' the analysts have an issue with providing every single theft by date for question 2 due to the shear amount of data this would produce.'

the date is the issue - the date of theft

I could:
'... receive the rest of the information for your request by MONTH & YEAR ... this week'

this suggests I can have the MM/YYYY of loss, as opposed to DD/MM/YY - have I understood this correct, as of so, you can provide part/most of question 2.

this would be fine.

Yours faithfully,

Mr P Swift

Metropolitan Police Service (MPS)

Dear P Swift,

Yes we can provide the month and year of loss but not the specific date of very single theft as there would need to be a spreadsheet row for every theft and there are over 30,000 so the spreadsheet would be very unwieldy and difficult to send.

Will this be acceptable to you and again apologies for the delay?

Dear Metropolitan Police Service (MPS),

thank you for the information with which I can undertake some analysis however, please see my original request and the format - https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/p...

I wish to be able to associate each vehicle loss with, for example, date of theft, its age and date of loss, as opposed to the totals supplied.

I am not unappreciative of the sorting undertaken, but as a single table/spreadsheet as requested, I could undertake the data sort

as an example of the further difficulty encountered:

calendar years are not provided,
Table 2: relates to 01/01/2023 to 27/02/2024. i do not understand the period, it does not reconcile with the request
Table 6 is for a similarly odd period

furthermore:
Table 2 presents the number of Stolen MV, broken down by MV Maker and Model.
Table 6 presents the number of Stolen MV, broken down by MV Maker and Model.

on the face of it, these are identical records - but they cover differing periods - as above
but it appears differing recording methodologies have been utilised, for example:

Table 2 sees the Fiat 500 Arbarth recorded under Fiat - 1 record but then as:
Abarath
Abarth
Abarth - 595
Abarth 595
Abarth 500
Abarth 500 S-A
Abarth 595
Abarth 595 Comp
Abarth 595 Essee
Abarth 595 Pista
Abarth 595 Turis
Abarth Competizi

Table 6 records the 500 under 'Arbarth' with no breakdown (as table 2) under Fiat

similarly, Land Rovers are recorded differently between the tables preventing analysis - I am unable to sort by age, model and date of theft

you had written:
'Yes we can provide the month and year of loss but not the specific date of very single theft as there would need to be a spreadsheet row for every theft and there are over 30,000 so the spreadsheet would be very unwieldy and difficult to send.'

I understood the date format was an issue for you; that this caused the output to be unwieldy and difficult to send

I am seeking a spreadsheet row for every theft. I am content to receive what is perceived as an unwieldy document - a record I possess from the DVLA details over 100,000 rows per tab (2 tabs i.e. 200,000+ rows) displaying 11 columns:
Date Stolen
Make
Model
Make in Full
Bodytype
Constabulary
First Registered
Date of Liability (VEL)
Recovered
Salvage Category
Date of Accident
more than I understand the MPS can send.

please can you adviseeby when this can be supplied.

thank you

Yours faithfully,

Mr P Swift

There is no statutory time limit in relation to the completion of an Internal Review. However, the MPS aim to complete Internal Reviews within 20 working days; or in exceptional cases, within 40 working days. This is based upon guidance published by the Information Commissioner.

If it is not possible to complete the Internal Review within this timescale you will be informed at the earliest opportunity.

If you are unhappy with the outcome of an Internal Review you may wish to refer the matter to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

Dear Metropolitan Police Service (MPS),

thank you for this - it looks to be exactly as requested

One thing, aside of FoiA, regarding:
'Please note that vehicle make and model are free text fields on CRIS for officers to complete, which may result in recording inconsistencies i.e. different names used for the same vehicle make/model and/or typographical errors.'
is there someone I can direct an enquiry to about this - with a new system (Connect) and modern data systems, it appears make/model could be auto-populated saving time and ensuring data consistency.

Yours faithfully,

Mr P Swift
