Movement of Displaced Polish Troops

Jonathan Allison made this Freedom of Information request to Ministry of Defence

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

Ministry of Defence did not have the information requested.

Jonathan Allison

Dear Ministry of Defence,

In the immediate post-war years, there were a number of movements (via boat and overland) of Polish nationals to the United Kingdom, both civilian and military.

To date, we have been able to access passenger lists for displaced civilians, but not for Polish military personnel. As an example, we know that SS Empress of Australia landed at Liverpool on 16th August 1946, with a contingent of 1,844 Polish troops not documented on the civilian passenger manifest.

If the MOD still has custody of these records, I would appreciate if they can be released. It would greatly help genealogists and those researching the military history of their relatives, if such military passenger lists were released.

Yours faithfully,

Jonathan Allison

Sent request to Ministry of Defence again, using a new contact address.

Goddard, Margaret D (NOR-Polish Disc Office), Ministry of Defence

Dear Mr Allison,

Thank you for your request to DB DBSCIO-KIRecords-4 which was forwarded to
our Disclosures.

Our Disclosures hold the service records of the Polish Forces under
British command during WWII (Army, Navy and Polish Air Force). Our records
are organized alphabetically so without a name I am not able to trace
ex-personnel. We do not have a list of military passengers arriving to the
United Kingdom.

You are advised to contact Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum:

I hope this is helpful.

Best regards,

Mrs Margaret Goddard
