Motorcycles and Bus Lane Widths

Marcus Houlden made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Transport Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

Department for Transport did not have the information requested.

Dear Department for Transport,

The DfT document LTN 1/24 Bus User Priority states "For cyclists, sharing a bus lane with motorcycles can have a detrimental effect on perceived safety unless the lane is more than 4.5m wide". Please provide emails, documents, meeting minutes and other items that explain how the figure of 4.5 metres was arrived at, and why it is felt pedal cycles need more room to be overtaken by motorcycles than by buses.

Yours faithfully,

Marcus Houlden
