Courtney Martin,

Good morning Mr Sorrentino,

Thank you for the request for information below. Your reference number is 11/16. Could you please provide clarification regarding the request below.?

Does your request below relate to incident data or crime data? Incident data relates to reported incidents (call outs) by members of the public, whereas our crime database provides information on recorded crimes. The incident database does not classify incident by crime category (criminal damage, violence to the person, sexual offences). What information would you prefer? Please bear in mind, that 'mosque' is not a specific location entered into either of our databases. Instead, we would have to perform a word search in the location field for 'mosque'. This would only retrieve incidents / crimes where 'mosque' has been entered into the location field.

Also, in regards to question 2, are you asking for the total number of hate crimes in the West Midlands, or the number of hate crimes where 'mosque' is in the location field?

Please provide the clarification requested before I proceed with the data collection. After receiving your reply, your request will be considered and you will receive a response within the statutory timescale of 20 working days, as defined by the Act, subject to the application of any statutory exemptions. If you choose not to response then your request will remain unanswered.

Yours sincerely

Courtney

Dear Courtney Martin,

I would ask for an incident database, in regards to your second question I'm referring to the number of hate crimes where 'mosque' is in the location field.

Yours sincerely,
Alessandro Sorrentino

RESPONSE

Please find attached our response.

Please note that these data should be interpreted with caution. Comparing
numbers of crimes can be misleading and does not necessarily indicate the
likelihood of someone being a victim of crime. In addition, the number of
incidents/crimes recorded in an area over a period of time can be
influenced by a number of factors. Consequently statistics on
incidents/crimes for one period may not necessarily be a good indicator of
future incidents in that area.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and
complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been
extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police
purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is
subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system.
As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes
and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting
those data.

The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of
data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of
figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken
into account when those data are used.

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you
to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as
to not mislead members of the public or official bodies, or misrepresent
the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.

As recommended as good practice by the Information Commissioner’s Office a
version of this response may be published on the West Midlands Police
website.
