Dear Ms Smithson

Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Request for Information – Missed Bins

I refer to your request for information dated 24 August 2020

The information you requested was:-

Please provide the following information for 2018, 2019 and 2020.

 1. The number of missed bin collections.

 2. How many extra bin lorries had to be sent out to pick up bins missed
during their routine collections.

 3. The additional costs to the council resulting from missed bin
collections.

 4. The average weekly and annual costs to the council of collecting
domestic waste, as in the regular landfill waste, food waste and
recycling created by homes which is collected by the council.

Response

In relation to the above, I have been advised of the following;

1.    The number of missed bin collections.

No collections in Percentage
Year = April to April year Missed Bins missed
2018- 2019 5,317,312 2,588 0.05%
2019- 2020 5,317,312 3,187 0.06%
2020- 2021 (to end July) 5,317,312 773 0.01%

Please note the figures  are for all bins missed that the public have
reported to us through the customer service centre or on-line portal. Not
all bins are actually ‘missed’ by the crews; customers forget to put  bins
out on time for collection, bins are over filled, excess waste prevents
access to the bins, bins are contaminated, weather prevents vehicle
access, or customer does not wait until the end of the working day to
report and often the vehicle has not reached that location when they make
contact as the vehicle has had to deviate due to road works etc.

2.    None

3.    No Additional costs

4.    Annual = £5.7 Million

Weekly = £109,615
