Dear Jonathan Fagg
The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is writing to respond
to your request, F22-8530, sent 20/01/2023.
Please see below your request and the Trust’s response below.
For the purposes of coding, Miscarriage is defined as the spontaneous loss
of pregnancy, by the expulsion or extraction of all or any part of a
non-continuing pregnancy, including placental tissue, membranes, gestation
sac and fetus, before the 24th completed week of pregnancy (i.e. up to and
including 23 weeks and 6 days of gestation). Miscarriage includes all
pregnancy losses from the time of conception until 24 weeks of gestation.
I have put all the relevant information into pivot tables under the
questions into 2 Groups
Group 1 (Blue Pivot Tables)
O03.- Spontaneous abortion ** with any 4^th character, is used to classify
a diagnosis of ‘spontaneous miscarriage’ or just ‘miscarriage’. The fourth
character identifies whether the miscarriage is complete or incomplete,
and whether there are associated complications.
O02.1 Missed abortion classifies a ‘missed miscarriage’, where a diagnosis
of miscarriage is before any bleeding has taken place e.g at a routine
antenatal scan.
Group 2 (Peach Tables)
Other codes in O00-O03 (part of the code block Pregnancy with abortive
outcome) are as follows
O00 Ectopic pregnancy
O00.0 Abdominal pregnancy
O00.1 Tubal pregnancy
O00.2 Ovarian pregnancy
O00.8 Other ectopic pregnancy
O00.9 Ectopic pregnancy, unspecified
O01 Hydatidiform mole
O01.0 Classical hydatidiform mole
O01.1 Incomplete and partial hydatidiform mole
O01.9 Hydatidiform mole, unspecified
O02 Other abnormal products of conception
O02.0 Blighted ovum and nonhydatidiform mole
O02.8 Other specified abnormal products of conception
O02.9 Abnormal product of conception, unspecified
