Mis-fuelling of motor vehicles

The request was successful.

Dear Cambridge Water Company plc,

Mis-filling of motor vehicles with the wrong fuel is a major issue in the UK with the costs of doing so ranging from £300 for a simple drain and flush through of the tank to over £5000 for those unfortunate enough to irreparably damage their engine. The AA has estimated that 150,000 such events occur each year. In addition, there is a heavy cost in terms of missed appointments and inconvenience.

Q1. Please provide the number of diesel vehicles currently operated by the water company and the number of occasions any of these vehicles has been misfilled with petrol requiring unscheduled servicing during each of the last two years.

Q2. Please provide the total direct cost associated with the mis-fuelling events.

Q3. If the motor vehicles are owned/maintained by a leasing company please provide the name of the leasing company.

Yours faithfully,

Nick Panchaud

Dear Mr Panchaud

I am very sorry would have needed to contact Cambridge Water a second
time to get simple answers to your questions re "misfuelling".

Your correspondence has now been forwarded to myself to reply to, given
my responsibility for Data Protection at Cambridge Water

Your original e-mail made a request for information under the
Environmental Information Regulations, and as indicated on your website
the Information Commissioner recently determined that the Environmental
Information Regulations do not apply to Water Companies. Thus my
colleagues assumed (correctly) we are not obliged to reply. However,
given my knowledge of previous requests from your organisation, I am
happy to reply as below

Q1. Our average fleet size over the last 5 years has been 30 vehicles.

We have had no occurrences of mis-fuelling over the this period.

Q2. Direct costs of mis-fuelling are therefore zero

Q3. We lease our fleet.

Perhaps I could ask you to acknowledge receipt of this e-mail, accept my
apology for the delay in replying, and confirm you have all the
information you require from us on this issue
