Minimum Unit Alcohol Tax, where does the additional income go?

David Webb made this Freedom of Information request to Welsh Government Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was successful.

Dear Welsh Government,

In regards to The Welsh Government's Minimum Unit Alcohol Tax, where does the additional income go? Does the Welsh Government collect the tax, or do the companies who produce the alcohol keep the extra as profit?

Yours faithfully,

David Webb

Welsh Government

Dear Mr Webb,

Thank you for your e-mail of 6 April regarding additional income generated by Minimum Unit Pricing, I have been asked to respond.

MUP is not a tax so any extra money generated goes to the drink’s retailers, not the Welsh Government. It may be though that alcohol sales will be reduced, which would result in less revenue for retailers.

Improving health by reducing alcohol harm could save money for the health service and the economy in Wales. Alcohol-related issues cost the NHS about £159m each year. MUP should therefore directly benefit the taxpayer, since the Welsh NHS is expected to see 1,281 fewer alcohol-related hospital admissions and 66 fewer deaths per year.

Yours faithfully,
Substance Misuse Team
