Minimum requirements for graduate trainee schemes

Peter Scott-Presland made this Freedom of Information request to Transport for London

The request was successful.

From: Peter Scott-Presland

3 December 2010

Dear Transport for London,

Recently someone I know was turned down immediately on applying for
one of the TfL Graduate trainee schemes on the grounds that she
"did not meet the minimum requirements of the scheme". Since these
are not listed on the application website, please let me know all
the minimum requirements which have to be met before an application
will even be considered. She has a first class MA in a
transport-related degree, and would seem at first sight to be an
ideal candidate.

Yours faithfully,

Peter Scott-Presland

Dear FOI,

I sent a reply detailing that it was for London Underground project
management, graduate trainee scheme, deadline 11th November. Do you
need more information than that? I would have thought this was
enough, but do you need more?

Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr Scott-Presland

Thank you for your further email received by Transport for London (TfL) on
3 December 2010. You have asked for the minimum requirements to apply for
the London Underground Project Management Graduate Trainee Scheme.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 and I can confirm that TfL does have the information
you require.

The minimum requirement for the scheme is a 2:1 bachelors honours degree,
so any applicants without this qualification would have been unsuccessful.
For the purposes of the application, a masters degree does not supersede
the bachelors degree result.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate
to contact me on the details below.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal.

Yours sincerely

Dear FOI,

Forgive the lateness of this follow-up; I thought I had written
earlier. My friend's degree was from a Turkish University (result -
distinction) but they do not have the same marking system as
English Universities. How does TfL assess degrees from foreign
universities which operate different systems of assessment? What
would be the equivalent of a 2.1 from a Turkish university?

Yours sincerely,

Peter Scott-Presland

James Wildman left an annotation (15 January 2011)

Quote-marks In 2009 the Patliamentary Select Committee for the Department of Universities, Science and Skills heard and accepted evidence that the Degree Classification system was no longer 'fit for purpose'. This is because each university and each university department sets its own criteria for deciding a grade.

Consequently, such grades are not an objective measure and could be inherently discriminatory. This has not, so far as I know, been established by a legal case.

Dear Mr Scott-Presland

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 15
January 2011, asking for information about the way in which TfL assesses
degrees from foreign universities, as well as the equivalent of a 2.1 from
a Turkish university.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 and I can confirm TfL does hold some of the
information you require.

1. How does TfL assess degrees from foreign universities which operate
different systems of assessment?

When applicants have degrees or qualifications from other countries, we
compare them against UK qualifications using the National Recognition
Information Centre for the United Kingdom (UK NARIC). Further information
regarding UK NARIC is available via the following link:
[1]http://www.naric.org.uk.

2. What would be the equivalent of a 2.1 from a Turkish university?

TfL does not hold a predetermined list of UK equivalents for degrees from
overseas universities. We refer to the UK NARIC database on a case-by-case
basis.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate
to contact me on the details below.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal.
