Military inquests

The request was successful.

Dear Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunal Service,

Your website indicates the Coroner is part of your service.

Could I please have answers to the following

1 Since 2010 how many inquests have taken place in respect of persons shot by the military?

2 In each case was the shooting found to be justifiable under section 3 of the Criminal Law Act (Northern Ireland) 1967?

3 In each case was this by a jury or a coroner sitting alone?

4 If any were found not to be justifiable under section 3 of the Criminal Law Act (Northern Ireland) 1967, were these referred to the PSNI?

5 Has any prosecution followed in respect of cases referred to the PSNI?

Yours faithfully,

Ricci Coulter

Dear Communications Group,
Thank you for your reply

you state “Neither the Coroner nor the jury shall express any opinion on questions of civil or criminal liability…”

In the last 3 inquests reported in the papers involving the military the Coroner stated as part of his ruling that the military were not justified in firing. This would appear to be an opinion on civil or criminal liability.

I therefore request a review.
