Microwave data transmitters/receivers on roof of Peckham Town Centre Car Park
Dear Sir or Madam,
I was recently on the roof of Peckham Town Centre Car Park to see the excellent art exhibition, Bold Tendencies III.
I noticed two sets of microwave data cannons, located inside steel fences, both pointing towards the rooftops of nearby housing blocks.
1. Does Southwark Borough Council own and/or operate these installations?
2. What data do they send and/or receive?
3. When were they installed?
Many thanks for your help with this matter.
Richard

Dear Mr Lovegood
The Borough CCTV cameras are transmitted via a combination of Fibre
Optic Cables leased by BT, NTL and there are some Borough owned fibre
links as well as microwave technology.
The equipment you have described are microwave transmission units. They
send and receive signals which allow our redeployable cameras to be
moved by our Licensed CCTV Operators and images transmitted back to the
Borough's Monitoring Suite.
The signals are very high frequency but low power and can not cause any
harm to anyone or anything in their path. They are used instead of the
very costly option of digging up roads and footways to lay cables.
Signals are transferred between the camera and a roof top, then sent
through a fibre link directly to the Monitoring Suite.
The top floor of the multi-storey car park has been off limits to the
public for some time. When the exhibition was opened, a fence was placed
around these units to protection them from possible damage by
unauthorised access.
The Borough has been using this technology successfully for around six
years now. As cameras are moved around the Borough, these units are
redeployed.
If you would like technical data showing power consumption and strength
of signal please contact Mr Ian Gentry CCTV Manager 0207 525 5924 who
will be more than happy to forward this onto you, to alleviate any
possible concerns that you may have regarding their safety.
