Metal detecting
Dear Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council,
Hi I am new to metal detecting.
Who would I need to speak to to gain permission to detect on the Wirral foreshore. Are there any beaches that don’t need permission.
I will back fill any hole and take all rubbish found with me to dispose of properly.
All finds will be recorded and reported correctly with the local Finds Liaison Officers ( FLOs ) Or The Portable Antiquities Scheme ( PAS ).
I am a member of the nation council for metal detecting (NCMD) and also cover by there excellent Civil Liability Insurance up to £10,000,000 which includes cover both in the UK and while attending organised metal detecting outings abroad.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Yours faithfully,
Mr a j upton
Dear Mr Upton
Unfortunately Wirral Council does not allow metal detecting on any of its land, including the Wirral foreshore. Further information can be found on our website at https://www.wirral.gov.uk/planning-and-b...

Dear InfoMgr, FinDMT,
Why is the council so against metal detecting on the foreshore. I understand the reason with Scheduled Ancient Monuments.
But people can dig big holes looking for bait and leave it as a hazard and people build sandcastles an dig big trenches on the beach leading to potential trip and fall hazards. Even horse riding can cause hazards and damage on the beaches.
Most responsible metal Detectorist leave the ground how they found it by back filling any holes they make and take all rubbish away with them. And everything found is recorded and reported.
Just seems there are so many hurdles put in front of this hobby, with no real explanations to why.
Yours sincerely,
Ashley

Whilst your wish to comply with the law is commendable, the council do not have the resources or will to comply with many of their statutory duties let alone police metal detectorists, and not even the By-Laws officers are aware of these seemingly arbitrary rules...
