Mary Clare, University of Manchester

Dear Mr Preston

Further to your request under section 1(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, please see below the response I have received from the Directorate for the Student Experience at The University of Manchester.

The University keeps records of student deaths that are reported via the Directorate for the Student Experience but any information about the cause of death is unofficial since it is for the Coroner to determine such facts and the University is rarely notified of the outcome of these proceedings, especially if a death occurs outside of Greater Manchester.

Geoffrey Preston

Dear University of Manchester,

Thank you for your email and the response you have had from the relevant department. As Coroners Courts are not subject to FOI requests and there appears to be confusion in the interpretation of my request I shall resubmit my FOI request without any ambiguity as I understand the information I require is held by UK universities:

1. Number of student suicides each year from 2005 WHICH OCCURED WHILE IN RESIDENCE AND DURING TERM TIME IN A UNIVESITY OF MANCHESTER OWNED HALL OF RESIDENCE.
a. To detail the age of victim and what they were studying?
b. Which Hall of Residence did the suicide take place?
c. To detail whether anyone associated with the University was aware of any mental
health issues prior to the suicide?

2. Number of student suicides each year from 2005 WHICH OCCURED WHILE IN RESIDENCE AND DURING TERM TIME IN A PRIVATELY OWNED HALL OF RESIDENCE ACCREDITED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER.
a. To detail the age of victim and what they were studying?
b. Which Hall of Residence did the suicide take place?
c. To detail whether anyone associated with the University was aware of any mental
health issues prior to the suicide?

3. Number of known attempted suicides each year from 2005 WHICH OCCURED WHILE IN RESIDENCE AND DURING TERM TIME IN A UNIVESITY OF MANCHESTER OWNED HALL OF RESIDENCE.
a. To detail the age of victim and what they were studying?
b. Which Hall of Residence did the attempted suicide take place?
c. To detail whether anyone associated with the University was aware of any mental
health issues prior to the attempted suicide?

4. Number of known attempted suicides each year from 2005 WHICH OCCURED WHILE IN RESIDENCE AND DURING TERM TIME IN A PRIVATELY OWNED HALL OF RESIDENCE ACCREDITED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER.
a. To detail the age of victim and what they were studying?
b. Which Hall of Residence did the attempted suicide take place?
c. To detail whether anyone associated with the University was aware of any mental
health issues prior to the attempted suicide?

Should the relevant department's officials not have all the information to hand then please could they state they do not have it? The last time I requested this information I received one paragraph which only answered one particular point. The information can easily be presented in spreadsheet form.

Yours faithfully,

Geoffrey Preston

Dear Mr Preston

The University does not hold the data as detailed in your request. As
previously noted the University keeps records of student deaths that are
reported via the Directorate of the Student Experience but data about the
cause of death is not held as it is up to the Coroner to determine this
and this information is not passed back to the University.

With best regards

Lisa Crawley
