Dear Miss Dinning

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request below
dated 24^th February 2016 in which you requested information regarding
Mental Health Statistics.

For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.

1.  How many first year students received "extenuating circumstances" for
mental health reasons in 2013, 2014, and 2015?

2.  How many second year students received "extenuating circumstances" for
mental health reasons in 2013, 2014 and 2015?

3.  How many third year students received "extenuating circumstances" for
mental health reasons in 2013, 2014 and 2015?

The information you have requested is held at Academic School level as the
process is managed by Academic Schools in relation to individual
programmes and is not routinely collated centrally.  As there are 25
Academic Schools it would take considerably more than 18 hours to collate
the information you require.  The University is not obliged to spend more
than 18 hours (as set by the Freedom of Information and Data Protection
(Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004) collating such information
and accordingly the exemption provided by section 12(2) of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 will apply.

We have attached the following in relation to the University’s extenuating
circumstances process:

·         Leaflet

·         Form

·         Process

4.  How many first year pupils have seen University services (for example,
counselling) for mental health issues?

The University has a Student Support and Wellbeing Department, which
includes a Counselling, Health and Wellbeing Service and a Disability &
Dyslexia Service.

·         The Counselling and Wellbeing Service offers one-to-one
counselling and wellbeing appointments, a drop-in service, interactive
workshops, group therapy, an online support programme and self-help
resources.

·         The Disability Service employs Mental Health Advisors who
provide advice in relation to the support available to students with
mental health difficulties and advise the University on reasonable
adjustments required for individual students under the Equality Act.

Records are held of the numbers of students that have accessed these
services in each academic year and this is shown below, together with some
information which is available in relation to the numbers of first year
students accessing the Counselling Service.  Information is not
specifically held of year of study of all students accessing the
Counselling Service & Disability Service and to extract this would require
checking individual records.  Due to the number of records involved this
would take considerably more than 18 hours to collate.  The University is
not obliged to spend more than 18 hours (as set by the Freedom of
Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations
2004) collating such information and accordingly the exemption provided by
section 12(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 will apply.
