Freedom of Information requests, University of Huddersfield

Dear Katie,

Our response to your request for information dated 24 February 2021 is
provided below.

Please note that the University does not centrally record the exact reason
for the students’ suspension of studies. Therefore to provide you with the
number of students who suspended their studies due to health reasons for
the timeframe requested, we would have to manually review a large number
of student records to extract the data. Section 12(1) of the Freedom of
Information Act makes provision for public authorities to refuse requests
for information where the cost of dealing with them would exceed the
appropriate limit set by The Freedom of Information and Data Protection
(Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004 (Statutory Instrument 2004
No. 3244).  For higher education bodies this limit is set at £450, which
represents the estimated cost of one person spending 18 hours in
determining whether the University holds the information, locating,
retrieving and extracting the information.  We are unable to estimate
exactly how long it would take to determine appropriate material, locate,
retrieve and extract the information requested, however, this is likely to
be well in excess of 18 hours.  Therefore, under Section 12(1) your
request will not be processed further.

In line with our duty to provide advice and assistance under Section 16 of
the Act, please note that we are able to provide you the number of
students who withdrew their studies due to health reasons within the
timeframe requested. You may therefore wish to consider reforming or
refocusing your request so that we can assist you within the cost limit.
Please note that a narrower request of this kind would be considered as a
new request.

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the
right to ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be
submitted within 40 working days from the date of our response to your
original request and should be addressed to the University Secretary,
University of Huddersfield, Queensgate, Huddersfield HD1 3DH or by email
to [1][University of Huddersfield request email].

and Patents Act 1988.
