Dear Manchester Metropolitan University,

I hope you are well.

I would like to receive information about the number of your full-time employees who currently have certification in mental health first aid training.

I would like to also kindly ask for the total number of students attending your university at the moment.

Yours faithfully,

Hana Bednarova

Dear Hana Bednarova

Please find below the information held by the University in the categories
you have requested:

There are currently 31,680 students enrolled (excluding dormant students
and those who are externally enrolled).

With regard to staff who have received training/certification in mental
health: it is not clear what you mean by ‘certification in mental health
first aid training’.  However, even if you supply a definition, the
University is unable to provide all of the information you have requested
within the cost limit for complying with a request under s12 of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000.  The cost limit under the Appropriate
Limits & Fees Regulations is £450/18 hours.  This is because staff
training is not managed and recorded centrally, but at a team/departmental
level; and the University has in the region of 6000 staff.  An attempt to
identify, extract and collate all relevant data would therefore be likely
to exceed the cost limit for complying with your request.

However, in order to assist you as far as possible, during the course of
our enquiries we located some examples of relevant data, which you may
find of interest, this is not a comprehensive set of data for the reasons
described above:

During the past 4 years:

-             Health & Safety:  ran a 2 day Mental Health First Aid course
for 16 participants.

-             Security: 22 staff completed Mental Health First Aid
training.

-             Student Counselling Service: have run development sessions
around mental health; the Counselling Service provides training through
the UTA suite of training and delivers workshops on request.  Online
training is also provided from the Charlie Waller Trust, but there are no
central records identifying the number of staff who have completed
training. There is a referral guide available for all University staff.
See the following webpage for more information:
[1]https://www2.mmu.ac.uk/counselling/staff/

We can also advise that the University’s new Strategic Student Mental
Health project has a specific workstream to address the issue of
developing and rolling out staff mental health training and looking into
making this training mandatory.

If you are dissatisfied with this response and wish to appeal our
decision, please write to [2][Manchester Metropolitan University request email] giving your reasons for
appealing.  You must appeal within 2 months of the date of this email.
Under s5.3 of the Freedom of Information Act Code of Practice, we are not
obliged to accept appeals/internal reviews after this date.  You also have
a subsequent right of appeal to the Information Commissioner’s Office
(ICO), see their website at: [3]https://ico.org.uk for more information.

Dear Michelle,

Thank you for getting back to me and for all the information.

for 16 participants.

- Security: 22 staff completed Mental Health First Aid
training.

- Student Counselling Service: have run development sessions
