Dear University of East London,

Under the Freedom of Information Act please could you provide me with some information about student mental health.

Across the University, what was the number of students, broken down for each academic year between 2008-9 and 2018-19, who intermitted for specifically mental health issues?

Of these students who intermitted, how many each year returned to the University to resume their studies one year after intermitting?

Of these students who intermitted, how many each year never returned to the University to resume their studies?

Please could you also provide me with the number of students, broken down for each academic year between 2008- 9 and 2018- 19, who have accessed counselling services provided by the university. If possible, please provide a breakdown of the types of issue the students are seeking help for.

Please could you provide me with this information in an excel spreadsheet.

If you need any clarification then please do not hesitate to contact me. Under Section 16 it is your duty to provide advice and assistance and so I would expect you to contact me if you find this request unmanageable in any way.

Yours faithfully,

Tilda Coleman

RESPONSE

Please see below a breakdown of figures for students who have accessed
counselling services from 2008 to 2019 – albeit:

o We cannot differentiate between counselling and other forms of
emotional health support (Wellbeing Drop In or Mental health Case
Work)
o We do not have figures dating before 2010 to 2011 as this was the
first academic year of electronic database recording in Student
Wellbeing.

Student Wellbeing Services appointments attended for Wellbeing Drop In
appointments, Counselling and Mental health support:

1.            2010 TO 2011 = 793 appointments attended

2.            2011 TO 2012 = 1,012 appointments attended

3.            2012 To 2013 = 1, 347 appointments attended

4.            2013 TO 2014 = 1,371 appointments attended

5.            2014 TO 2015 = 1,264 appointments attended

6.            2015 TO 2016 = 904 appointments attended

7.            2016 TO 2017 = 1,728 appointments attended

8.            2017 To 2018 = 1,373 appointments attended

9.            2018 TO 2019 = 1,912 appointments attended

We do not hold records of students who have intermitted their studies due
to a mental health illness. Our database records “Health Reasons” and does
not specifically cite mental health as the reason for the intermission.
