Men and Women referred to a DVPP course as a Court Ordered Activity Direction

B Maloney made this Freedom of Information request to Children and Family Court Advisory Support Service

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Children and Family Court Advisory Support Service,

In August 2016 you reported in a news article (since deleted from your website) that over 700 men had been sent on Domestic Violence Perpetrator Programmes as a court ordered activity.

In your annual report and accounts for 2015-2016 you say:
"500 individuals during the year as part of an activity ordered by the court and aimed at establishing safe and beneficial contact where this is possible. Cafcass spent £790,000 on these programmes during the year."

In your annual report and accounts for 2016-2017 you state there were: "566 families involved with DVPP and support services" and you claim the expenditure was £0.75m

In both these reports you provide a glossary which states:
"Domestic Violence Perpetrators Programme (DVPP) – A course that helps adults who have been violent towards another person learn how to control their anger."

For each of the periods covered by these two annual reports can you please provide numbers for:
1) The number of men referred to DVPP courses as a court ordered activity.
2) The number of women referred to DVPP courses as a court ordered activity.

In addition:
3) If these courses only accept men, can you please explain why you describe the courses as helping "adults" when they are only helping male adults.
4) Can you please explain what interventions are available within Cafcass for helping violent female adults learn to control their anger?
5) In the 18 months since my FOI request here: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/l... can you please explain what steps Cafcass has taken to commission courses for female perpetrators of domestic violence?

Yours faithfully,

B Maloney
