Michael McCarthy

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'd like to know:

1. How the membership of the Senior Salaries Review Body, which apparently will determine MPs' pay from now on, was arrived at.

2. How many of these ten members are considered to be representative of the average citizen, and in what respect/s; or alternatively, whether the membership is collectively, in the Prime Minister's phrase, more reminiscent of “the gentlemen’s clubs of the 19th century”.

3. How many of these ten members live on state benefits.

4. How many of these ten members earn no more than the minimum wage.

5. How many of these ten members earn average or below average wages.

6. Why none of these ten are women.

7. How many days per year these ten members are engaged in determining senior salaries, and how much they are paid for their services on these days.

8. What total sum in expenses each one claimed, and for what, in the last full year.

9. Why there are no biographical details on the Office of Manpower Economics website for five out of the ten members of the Senior Salaries Review Body - which of course makes it impossible for members of the public to form a judgement about whether these are appropriate persons to serve on this committee.

10. The missing biographical details.

Yours etc.,

Michael McCarthy

It's pretty clear, even though some of the information requested was not supplied, that the assessment of senior salaries is safely in the hands of the kinds of persons who regard incomes which most UK citizens can only dream about as wholly unexceptionable. Persons who, in the prime minister's phrase, would feel at home in a 19th-century gentlemen's club - and not just because none of them are women.
