Dear Tanne,
Re: Freedom of Information Request – Medication Prompts
Thank you for your request for information made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000,
which was received into this office on 25th November 2019.
You Asked for:
Medication prompts are defined as:
The definition of 'prompting' is: 'the action of saying something to persuade, encourage or
remind someone to do or say something'. Prompting of medication is reminding a person of the
time and asking if they have or are going to take their medicines. (Google.com)
1. Do you fund Medication Prompts?
2. If yes, under which funding budget line/service is it allocated?
3. Do you joint fund Medication Prompts with your local Adult Social Service Department?
4. How many clients do you currently fund?
5. What is your predicted annual spend for Medication Prompts?
6. How long/Since when have you funded Medication Prompting Service?
Our Response:
1. NHS Wirral Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) fund the pill dispenser device which
dispenses medication and could also be considered a prompt. If it is only a prompt that is
needed then there are other cost-effective avenues for prescribers to look at, e.g. mobile
phones and apps etc. These would not come through the Wirral Independence Service.
2. The funding comes from the Community Equipment budget.
3. The budget is a pooled budget between NHS Wirral CCG and Wirral Borough Council.
4. Currently, 22 clients possess the pill dispenser device.
5. For the pill dispenser device, it costs around £700 per year due to the low numbers that
are prescribed. As mentioned previously, patients will primarily be using other prompts
which are not funded by the service.
6. The pill dispenser device has been available on the catalogue for 4 years.
We hope this information is useful, however if you require any further information please do not
hesitate to contact a member of the Corporate Affairs Team (contact details at the top of this
