Dear Mr Hughes

In reply to your FOI request received on 8 February:

2020 Admission data

A spreadsheet is attached for Medical Science (A100), kindly prepared by
our Admissions Office.  You will note that this does not contain answers
pertaining to your questions 1, 5 and 7.  The reasons are as follow:

1. We are not certain what you mean by 'achieved/predicted scores of
applicants' or 'GCSE average', 'Achieved/predicted scores' might meant
their overall A level results but could mean their predictions at time of
applying or even a prediction for interview or their BMAT.

5. We do not hold this data, file scores are not uniformly recorded.

7. 'GCSE average' could mean an individual's average grade, average points
based on grade, or the average grade across the cohort who applied to us
or in their school. It could even mean the average number taken.

If you wish to pursue this data please clarify these points.

2021 Admissions data

This information, insofar as it is held (noting that the current
undergraduate applications cycle is ongoing), is exempt under section
36(2)(c) of the Act because its disclosure would be likely to prejudice
the effective conduct of public affairs, in this case the integrity of the
College’s applications and admissions process which form a fundamental
part of its mission as an educational institution. (As the information
requested is statistical in nature, the opinion of the qualified person
did not need to be sought for this application of section 36.)

The current undergraduate applications cycle is ongoing and applications
are still being submitted and assessed. The College considers that the
disclosure of detailed statistics about applications made within the
current cycle would be likely to prejudice the notion of a fair and
confidential admissions process whereby each applicant has the same
information at their disposal and partial granular data is not disclosed
to specific members of the public while the process is ongoing.

As this is a qualified exemption, the College has considered whether, in
all the circumstances of the case, the public interest in maintaining the
exemption outweighs the public interest in disclosing the information. The
College  considers that, while some people might have an understandable
private interest in these statistics, there is no genuine public interest
in them when set against the extensive statistical information available
about previous admissions cycles published [1]at
https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.u... coupled with
the prevailing public interest in maintaining a level playing field in
terms of the information available to all applicants.

Yours sincerely

Benjamin Hughes

Dear Liz Wake,

I am writing to clarify points 1 and 7 as per my request.

Question 1 relates to predicted grades of A levels on an individual's UCAS application to the college.

Question 7 relates to individual applicants grades. For simplicity, I would like to ask for the number of A* or equivalent achieved at GCSE. We include level 8 and level 9 at GCSE as A*.

I am immensely grateful for the information recieved so far.

Yours sincerely,

Benjamin Hughes
