Freedom of Information, University of St Andrews

Dear Ben,

I refer to your request for information under the Freedom of Information
(Scotland) Act 2002 and my subsequent acknowledgement.  I have been
liaising with the School of Medicine on your enquiry and it has been
highlighted that your request refers to 6 years of study which does not
directly correlate with the degree programme offered here at the
University of St Andrews i.e. we do not offer an MBChB or MBBS degree.  We
operate a three year BSc (Honours) Medicine programme and not a full A100
course .

With this in mind, it is unclear whether any information held by the
University will be of relevance to your enquiry or if the request had been
sent to ourselves on the assumption that the University offered a 5/6 year
course of study which is not the case.  To clear up any uncertainty I
would be grateful if you could clarify the position before the processing
of your request proceeds any further.

For your information, you will details of the University’s BSc (Honours)
Medicine programme on our website at:
[1]http://medicine.st-andrews.ac.uk/ .

This request for additional information is made under Section 1(3) of the
Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.  Please note that under
Section 10(1)(b) of the Act, the University has 20 working days after
receipt of the additional information by the University in which to comply
with your request.

Your request will therefore be held pending until I hear from you further.

Yours sincerely,

June

Dear Freedom of Information,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I'm sorry my original request was unclear, I sent the same request to a number of Medical schools and designed the request to cover all the possible number of years available.

To clarify, I wish to request the learning outcomes given to the students at St Andrews for all of the years in which they study at St Andrews.

Thanks for your time.

Yours sincerely,

Ben Evans

Dear Freedom of Information,

As I have had some difficult from other medical schools, not that I anticipate any from St Andrews, I thought I would provide some further information.

I am requesting the information given to your students as the Learning Outcomes/Learning objectives that are provided, presumably in modular form to students to give them an indication of what they need to gain from certain lectures.

An example of a learning outcome would be 'Describe the anatomy of the head & neck' this might be contained within a document given to the students named 'Anatomy & Movement'. A number of these documents would constitute all learning outcomes given to the first year medical students.

For the avoidance of doubt, these learning outcomes/learning objectives or integrated learning points may be contained in a pdf, or a handbook given to students upon commencing each year of medical school.

Thank you very much and I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Ben Evans

Dear June,

Thank you for your informative and speedy response.

Please could you clarify and confirm, for the avoidance of doubt, that the only anatomical learning outcomes given to St Andrews medical students are those found in Appendix A.

For simplicity these amount to "Anatomy Practical exams- assessment testing knowledge, understanding and application of 3-dimensional human anatomy".

Thus St Andrews students are provided no other anatomical learning outcomes, or structured learning objectives, like those outlined, and originally requested under the FOIA.

Again, to avoid doubt or confusion, these may be presented in a structured pdf or handbook given to medical students at the beginning of each year and would include statements such as;

'Describe the distribution of the facial nerve'

'Describe the blood supply to the neck'

'Identify the muscles of the forearm'

I look forward to your reply - these are the learning outcomes I requested under the original message - I did not request any other guidance given to the students. If there are other anatomy outcomes given to students, please could you provide them under the timeline of the original request, if not I am more than happy to receive a confirmation email at your leisure.

Yours sincerely,

Ben Evans
