Dear Dr Marshall

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated 2^nd
November 2021.

For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.

 1. Data for groups of applicants

Can I please request the following statistics on applicants who applied to
study medicine at Cardiff, for application cycles relating to the
following years of entry: 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021:

Please split the data in the following groups:

A100

International undergraduate applicants;

International graduate applicants,

Home undergraduate applicants,

Home graduate applicants.

A101

International undergraduate applicants;

International graduate applicants,

Home undergraduate applicants,

Home graduate applicants.

International means considered international for fee purposes. Home,
includes all candidates that qualified as home fees. I understand that in
previous years, that includes both UK and EU applicants.

If these exact groups are not available, please provide the data  in an
equivalent, or similar grouping that you have available. For areas where
the data will not apply, for example undergraduate and GAMSAT score,
please put “NA”.

For each of these 4 groups, and per programme, I would like to know the
following information

Number of applicants (total)

Number of applicants (with contextual data/factors)

Number of applicants interviewed

Number of offers

Number of places -

Number of deferrals

There are always 309 places, which Includes 25 places for international
applicants.

We do not have any way to identify those who are offered a place, and then
defer entry.

A100

The way our records are hold we are unable to determine if any applicants
already hold a first degree (i.e., are graduate applicants) at the time of
application.

A100 Applicants 2018/9 2019/0 2020/1
Home 1737 2039 2332
Overseas 393 394 399

A100 Interviews 2018/9 2019/0 2020/1

Overseas 87 109 120

A100 Offers 2018/9 2019/0 2020/1
Home 651 679 709
Overseas 54 57 58

A101

The way our records are hold we are unable to determine if any applicants
were awaiting the award of a first degree (i.e., are undergraduate) at the
time of application.

A101 Applicants 2018/9 2019/0 2020/1
Home 111 24 119
Overseas 11 <5 35

A101 Interviews 2018/9 2019/0 2020/1

Overseas <5 0 0

A101 Offers 2018/9 2019/0 2020/1
Home 29 0 0
Overseas <5* 0 0

*There are a small number of instances where the numbers of applicants,
interviews and offers are so small, that providing information to an exact
level would substantially increase the risk of persons being identified,
therefore totals fewer than 5 are represented as <5.

The information is exempt by virtue of Section 40(2) of the Freedom of
Information Act entitled Personal Information.  As this information would
constitute the individual's personal data as defined under Article 4 of
the UK GDPR, to release the information would breach the data protection
principle concerning fairness.
