Dr Leeron Marshall

Dear compliance team,

I have simplified the FOI request as per your concerns about time/cost. I hope you will find this satisfactory. I think perhaps I worded it in such a way that made it look a lot more than it is as other universities have replied with the data requested.

In addition, the exemption of 40(2) to provide personal data only apples when that person can be identified. It is possible to release data with arbitrary identification numbers rather than candidate numbers so that the individual applicants cannot be identified.

Please let me know if anything else can be clarified.

I request 2 data sets. One for groups of applicants and one anonymised per individual applicant. I would like all data to please be provided in a spreadsheet.

Dear Dr Marshall

Unfortunately, it is not clear from your latest email how your request has
been refined and we still consider it will greatly exceed the appropriate
limit, especially as you are asking for data over four years relating to a
number of courses at the University.

In addition, as explained in my previous email, we cannot provide any
information for the second part of your request as data on individual
applicants (even if anonymised) relates to individuals.  This would apply
even if we were to apply "arbitrary identification numbers rather than
candidate numbers so that the individual applicants cannot be identified"
as you have suggested.  There may be other information which you could
obtain from the University, either through further Freedom of Information
requests or other means which could be used to identify the individuals
here.  Should an individual be identified then the University would be in
breach of data protection regulations. Therefore, we are exempting the
numbers in accordance with Section 40 of the FOIA, Personal Information.

We will only consider a request which has been refined considerably and
the 20 working day statutory deadline will begin from the date of your
clarification.

I will not be able to take this matter further without this extra
information from you. Please let me know by 25 November 2021.

If I do not hear from you within the timeframe provided, I shall take it
that you do not wish to pursue this request and will consider the request
closed.

Yours sincerely,

Karen Page
