Dear General Medical Council,
Under the Freedom of Information Act, I would like to know:
1) Which medical schools have been asked to trial the MLA?
2) What dates the MLA was trialled on?
3) What year of study were the students in at the time of sitting the MLA?
4) What was the mean and median score for each medical school?
5) What was the pass rate for each medical school?
6) How many students from each medical school agreed to the trial?
Yours faithfully,
Grace Thomson

Dear Ms Thomson
Further to your FOI request, please see below.
The Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) has two components: the Applied
Knowledge Test (AKT) and the Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment
(CPSA). The MLA will be taken by two candidate groups: students in medical
schools at UK universities and international doctors who want to join the
UK medical register.
Your questions specifically reference medical schools, so the below
information relates to the MLA as it will be taken by students at UK
medical schools.
The two components of the MLA for students at UK medical schools have
different delivery models.
For the CPSA, each medical school designs and delivers its own assessment.
For the AKT – following a [1]proposal to the GMC from the Medical Schools
Council (MSC) on behalf of all UK medical schools – the AKT is developed
by MSC and will be delivered locally by each school. Both components,
however, must comply with the requirements that we’ve set out in
[2]Assuring readiness for practice: a framework for the MLA.
In relation to your second question, regarding the CPSA, we ran a pilot to
develop the quality assurance process. This involved volunteer assessment
providers and independent assessment experts and ran from February to July
2020. The [3]pilot report is available on our website.
The medical school AKT pilot began in academic year 2021-22 and will
complete at the end of academic year 2023-24. It’s coordinated and
delivered by MSC.
We do not hold information in respect of questions 1, 3 to 6 [listed
below].
1. Which medical schools have been asked to trial the MLA?
2. What dates the MLA was trialled on?
3. What year of study were the students in at the time of sitting the
MLA?
4. What was the mean and median score for each medical school?
5. What was the pass rate for each medical school?
6. How many students from each medical school agreed to the trial?
If you have any concerns about the way I’ve handled your request, please
set out your reasons in writing to [4][GMC request email]
Yours sincerely
Julian Graves
