Metropolitan Police Service (MPS)

Dear Mr. Leaton,

Freedom of Information Request Reference No: 2018080000252

I write in connection with your request for information which was received

I would like to apologise for the delay in getting this response to you
and for any inconvenience this may have caused.

SEARCHES TO LOCATE INFORMATION

To locate the information relevant to your request searches were conducted
with DPS and the East London borough command units.

For your information, the boroughs that were contacted were as follows:

Barking and Dagenham

Bexley

Greenwich

Hackney

Havering

Lewisham

Newham

Redbridge

Tower Hamlets

Waltham Forest

For all MPS boroughs and operational command units to check their Gift and
Hospitality registers for a year's worth of entries would be likely to
engage cost and so I have focused on the East London boroughs, as per your
request.

DECISION

I have today decided to provide you with the information that has been
collated by the boroughs in question.

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) Gifts and Hospitality Policy sets
out the process for reporting offers of gifts and hospitality.  MPS
officers are aware of this policy and of the high standards expected of
them, to act with professionalism and integrity.  Each of the boroughs
named above have confirmed that no entries have been made in their Gifts
and Hospitality Registers pertaining to McDonald's in the past year.

I have been informed that there are some McDonalds restaurants within the
Lewisham area (Pettman Crescent SE18, Ruston Road SE18, Bell Green Retail
Park SE26) that often provide officers that are in uniform meals at the
staff rate of 50% (this is meals only and not other items on the menu) -
these are not free, but offered at a discounted rate at the managers'
discretion.  Purchasing a discounted meal in these circumstances would not
be considered as acting corruptly.

Should you have any further enquiries concerning this matter, please
contact me quoting the reference number above.

Yours sincerely

Dear Metropolitan Police Service (MPS),

Thank you for your response. What is interesting is that Newham admit to receiving hospitality in exchange for protection for McDonalds from local gangs, and yet no declarations have been made.

There is wide spread corruption going on. The officers in Newham claim there is an agreement, and the problem here is that other FOIs submitted by other people have come back with the response that no such agreement exists.

Equally for the Met to get police officers who are in all likelihood in receipt of this hospitality to investigate themselves is completely wrong. Then for those police offices to admit they won't do a proper job investigating corruption shows the same.

Yours faithfully,

Nick Leaton

Metropolitan Police Service (MPS)

Dear Mr Leaton,

Thank you for your email. We do not believe that the below includes a new FOI request or a complaint about our response however if this is not the case please do let me know.

I would like to make you aware that complaints about police officers are dealt with by our Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) and we would not allow an officer in receipt hospitality to investigate themselves. If you would like to raise this matter as a formal complaint please see the following link:
