Mattress disposal - provision and methods in Wales

1. Do you accept mattresses at the majority/all your HWRCs? Please answer yes or no.
2. If yes, what is the charge in £ per mattress?
3. How are most of the mattress materials and components disposed of from HWRCs?

I refer to your request for information, which was received on 6th September, 2023 and has been dealt with under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

1. Do you accept mattresses at the majority/all your HWRCs? Please answer yes or no.
YES
2. If yes, what is the charge in £ per mattress?
FREE to householders
3. How are most of the mattress materials and components disposed of from HWRCs?
Please select one option:
a) Sent for recycling (i.e., separated into component parts)
b) Sent for landfill
c) Sent for incineration for energy recovery
The mattresses are currently being separated at a secondary location with any metals sent for recycling and the flock is sent for EfW.
4. Do you offer a collection service for mattresses? Please answer yes or no.
YES as part of our bulky waste collection service
5. If yes, what is the charge in £ per mattress?
We do not charge per mattress but charge £25 for up to 3 items as part of our bulky waste collection service
6. If yes, how are most of the mattress materials and components disposed of from collections? Please select one option:
a) Sent for recycling (i.e., separated into component parts)
b) Sent for landfill
c) Sent for incineration for energy recovery
The mattresses are currently being separated at a secondary location with any metals sent for recycling and the flock is sent for EfW.
7. Does your authority have plans to revise how mattresses are disposed of in the next 12 months? Please answer yes or no.
Not specifically mattresses but we are reviewing our bulky waste collections to make them more efficient. With regard to recovery of our mattresses, they become the property of our TECKAL Cwm Environmental once they are deposited at the HWRCs and the TECKAL decide on the recovery/disposal route.
