Maths Tripos Mark Schemes

The request was refused by University of Cambridge.

Dear University of Cambridge,

Please may I have the mark schemes for Parts IA, IB, II of the Mathematical Tripos for the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 examinations.

By mark scheme, I am referring to a set of model answers which indicate where marks were awarded for questions, similar to those which are published for the 2011 Part IA examinations at https://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/undergrad/pa... I know that these exist and are produced in the examining process as I have seen them first hand for previous years.

Yours faithfully,

Ciara Aberdeen

Maths Undergrad-Office,

Dear Ciara,

This message is in response to your FOI request for mark schemes and
solutions for the last 5 years of Maths Tripos exams. (We are assuming
here that you are the current Part II student of the same name and
apologise if that’s not the case.)

Faculty policies on the availability and distribution of "model answers"
have been agreed with the best educational outcomes for all students
firmly in mind. In particular, we believe that there are sound reasons for
not simply making all examiners' solutions more widely available, and this
raises obvious problems, on grounds of fairness, if they should become
available to a subset of students.

We are therefore concerned about the adverse implications of your request
for students generally, and we would like to understand better your
reasons and motivations for making the request. We would be more than
happy to discuss this and hear any views you may have on the way the
current policy operates (you are also able to raise such issues with the
student representatives on Faculty Board or the Teaching Committee).

It would be very helpful to hear back from you so that we could see if
there are more constructive ways to proceed.

Best wishes

Jonathan Evans
