Roland Rashleigh-Berry

Dear Local Government Ombudsmen,

Please tell me where the responsibility lies for a mandatory rates relief application to ensure that the premises are wholly or mainly used for charitable purposes. Is this the responsibility of the trustees of the charity or the responsibility of the local authority handling the application? Please point me to the relevant section(s) of the published guidelines.

Yours faithfully,
Roland Rashleigh-Berry

I think you are asking the wrong organisation. There is no reason for the Local Government to hold this information? Have you tried Googling for the information or asking your local council.

I think it is OK. The ombudsmen will have the regulations that the local authorities must apply in these matters and will know about what guidelines should be applied. They are the experts on local government "process".

FOI can only be used to access information held by a public organisation. The LGO will not hold the information you seek.

Foi Officer, The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman

Dear Mr Rashleigh-Berry

I do not consider this to be a freedom of information request - you are asking for guidance about published information, not about information specifically about or held by the Local Government Ombudsman. The Ombudsman investigates complaints about local authorities. If you think you may have a complaint about your council, you should ring our Advice Team on 0300 061 0614 and they be able to help you.

Yours sincerely
