Maintenance state and policy over Southern Cemetry's Buildings
Dear Manchester City Council,
There appear - at least to the casual visitor(!) - to be three buildings built for funerals in Southern Cemetry; there's the modern Crematorium, and two older building to the west and east of the central oval. I'm interested to know:
What is their general state of repair?
Are they listed buildings inside or out?
How often are they used - hours per week (rough estimate only!)?
Are they available for use for funerals on a Saturday or Sunday?
Would the council be willing to see them rented out for use on a regular basis / exclusive basis by a religious group, possibly with the group financing any repair work necessary?
Yours faithfully,
John Davidson

Dear [email address],
Thank you for your rapid response. Thank you for clarifying that the CREMATORIUM building is the responsibility of Manchester Crematorium Ltd. However I also asked about the other buildings within the Southern Cemetry area, which is, according to the website, a municipal cemetry operated by you.
So please let me have the information about the two buildings at each end of the oval - unless you are saying they are ALSO owned and operated by Manchester Crematorium - an idea I would find strange given their location, but I am willing to accept if you assure me that it is the case!
Yours sincerely,
John Davidson

Re: Request for Information – Southern Cemetrys Buildings – Reference
Number: FOI/14521
Thank you for your request for information, which was received by
Manchester City Council on 25/11/2024 and has been considered under the
provisions of the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (“the EIR”).
We can confirm that the Council does hold the requested information.
What is their general state of repair? - These buildings are dilapidated
and unsafe to enter.
Are they listed buildings inside or out? -The interior and exterior of
both chapels are Grade 2 listed.
How often are they used - hours per week (rough estimate only!)? - These
buildings are no longer in use.
Are they available for use for funerals on a Saturday or Sunday? - They
are not currently available for funerals.
Would the council be willing to see them rented out for use on a regular
basis / exclusive basis by a religious group, possibly with the group
financing any repair work necessary? - These buildings are
currently dilapidated and not fit for use. Any proposed use in the future
would need to take into account the state of the chapels, and would also
need to fit in with the general working practices of the Cemetery.
Information about the re-use of council information is available

process described. Your request will be considered in accordance with the
