Maghaberry and Hydebank

leanne flynn made this Freedom of Information request to Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons,

Could you please provide any details on plans to review the two locations, Maghaberry and Hydebank for safety and health purposes. I would recommend environmental samples of air quality, paints, equipment, grounds, etc. based on the violent and obstinate behavior of staff and clients. Recently, the Red Cross was turned away from Hydebank, and earlier this year the United Nations visiting physician was also turned away, although invited back later, when Hydebank was 'ready' for them.

The United Nations made some important humanitarian changes in 2010- declaring confinement of prisoners in small spaces over so many hours to be torture, and any form of electroshock therapy to also be torture. Please forward me any documents you received to assist your staff and your office to implement changes related to those great UN changes.

Yours faithfully,

leanne flynn
