'Magenta Living' Housing Association......Councillors on the Board.

Alan Rundle made this Freedom of Information request to Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council,

It is very possible that the housing association - 'Magenta Living' (formerly known as 'Wirral Partnership Homes' - WPH) is the worst housing association in the UK.
Magenta Living took possession of 13,179 Council Homes, from Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council ("the Council"), in February 2005, at zero cost. There was no financial payment for the homes.
WPH made a commitment to the Council, to Council tenants and to the Charities Commission that it would improve the quality of the housing stock in its possession and provide housing for those in housing need.
Far from providing housing for those in housing need, Magenta Living now manages only 12,798 homes, that is 381 fewer homes than WPH took possession of, from the Council, in February 2005.

There are two Councillors on the Board of 'Magenta Living' ......Jeff Green (Conservative) and Steve Foulkes (Labour).........both paid considerable sums of money (annually) to act as Magenta Living Board members.

Magenta Living currently has 291 empty properties in its portfolio of 12,798 properties, including 22 empty homes at Ashton Court, Banks Road, West Kirby. The last elderly tenants to live at Ashton Court left their homes in 2011. At that time they paid £110 per month in rent to WPH, they had two communal rooms and a warden. In 2011 WPH paid each elderly resident £5,000 to leave their homes at Ashton Court (due to 'development plans'). Some of those residents now live at 'Redshanks' (formerly 'Hoose Court') in Market Street, Hoylake......owned by Magenta Living......where the rents are £550 per month (where there are no communal rooms and no warden). Three 'guardians' lived at Ashton Court for twelve months, during 2013 band 2014 (paying £189 per month in rent to Magenta Living).
Magenta Living argues that the last tenants left Ashton Court in 2014. This is incorrect. The last elderly tenants left Ashton Court in 2011. Essentially, Ashton Court has now been unoccupied for eight years (except for the temporary presence of three 'guardians'.
Today, in 2019 Magenta Living is responsible for 291 long-term, unoccupied properties, including Ashton Court, at a time when many people are homeless.
Magenta Living has an annual income in excess of £50 million and is tax exempt (due to its 'charitable' status).

Would the Council please provide detailed information provided by Councillors Jeff Green (Conservative) and Steve Foulkes (Labour), as Magenta Living Board members, to the Council, detailing:
(i) the efforts they have made to refurbish and modernise Ashton Court so that elderly residents can live there again;
(ii) their annual payments from Magenta Living;
(iii) the efforts they have made to get the 291 unoccupied Magenta Living homes occupied once again;
(iv) accurate details concerning the lengths of time since tenants lived in all of the empty 291 Magenta Living homes (excluding times when 'guardians' have temporarily occupied these properties);
(v) whether Magenta Living includes the 291 unoccupied homes, for which it has responsibility, are entered at zero rent properties, to its accountants, in order to bring down the average Magenta Living rent to £88.68 per week; and
(vi) all other information shared by Councillors Jeff Green (Conservative) and Steve Foulkes (Labour) concerning Magenta Living, with the Council.

Yours faithfully,

Alan Rundle
