Price, Gareth,

Our ref: 18843866

Dear Mr Smith,

Thank you for your email  of 27 August 2018 about variable speed limit
cameras on the M4.I am answering this request under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000.

The variable speed limit on the M4 is operated by both manual and
automatic systems.Speed limits may be set by the regional operations
centre in response to a report of an incident or an actual incident
occuring, they may also be set within the time you specify to protect road
workers setting out temporary traffic management for overnight roadworks.

Speed limits may bet set automatically when the Motorway Incident
Detection and Automatic Signalling system (MIDAS) detects queueing traffic
from sensors situated within the road surface.I can confirm that the speed
limit is applied consistently and within the parameters of the signs
indicating the variable speed limit which are clearly displayed.

I hope this answers your enquiry. If you have any further queries, please
contact our Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or

Kind regards,

Gareth Price
