Dear M W

Thank you for your email to Highways England on 16 December 2019
concerning variable speed limit settings on enforcement site 4620b located
on the M1 southbound J35 to J34 on 14 November 2019 at 15:32.

The information you have requested we make available to the public on a
regular basis.

Your request has been handled under normal business practices and not in
accordance with the Freedom of Information Act/Environmental Information
Regulations.

Having checked Highways England systems I can confirm the following refers
to settings for the enforcement site 4620b on the M1 southbound J35 to J34
on the specified date and time requested:-

15:12 temporary speed setting was set to 40mph for safety reasons due to
high winds across detected over Junction 34 viaduct  (Meadowhall).

15:47 temporary speeds of 40mph were removed as wind speeds had decreased,
at this time a temporary speed limit of 60mph was implemented by the
automatic queue detection system due to volumes of traffic in the area.

For added information if the enquiry relates to a Police enforcement
notice, it is the Police who operate all speed enforcement, as part of the
evidential trail the Police obtain images from the cameras which show the
vehicle travelling under the gantry along with an image of the displayed
temporary speed limit as the vehicle passes the enforcement site.

If you wanted to check this image, it can be obtained by requesting a copy
from the relevant Police Camera Partnership which for this location is
South Yorkshire Police.

Thank you once again for contacting us and I hope the above information
assists your enquiry.

If you have any further questions regarding any other Highways England
issue please feel free to contact us via our 24 hour Customer Contact
Centre on 0300 123 5000. Alternatively, please e-mail us at
